Garage Doors in Peterborough, OntarioKnow it's closedfrom wherever you are.

A smart controller lets you check the door from your phone, close it if you forgot, and get a note when it opens. We set the hardware up, connect it to your network, and make sure the safety sensors still take priority over any app.

From the shop

Repairs that hold. Doors that last.

An opener has to be set up for the door it is lifting. We adjust travel limits so the door closes fully without slamming, set the force so it reverses on a light obstruction, and confirm the sensors are wired and aligned. Then we program every remote, keypad and wall button and clear out any codes from devices you no longer own.

Garage door services

Our garage door work

One noisy door can wake a household. One stuck door can hold up a whole morning. Our services are organized around fixing what stops you, and around the maintenance that keeps it from happening again.

Repairs

Repair & Maintenance

The best time to look at a door is before anything breaks. An inspection walks through the springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, seals and opener settings in turn, and comes back with a plain list of what is fine and what is not.

Springs

Springs & Hardware

Hinges hold the sections together and let them fold around the curve of the track. When they crack or wear oval, the door binds and the panels begin to separate.

Garage Door Roller ReplacementThe door is the one the builder installed and has never had a part changed. It works, but it clatters, the wheels are hard white plastic with no bearings in them, and the opener sounds like it is labouring more each…
  2. A person examines a central hinge joining two sections of a closed garage door. — Garage Door Hinge Replacement, Peterborough
Garage Door Hinge ReplacementWatching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling, then close again. The other side stays tight.
  3. Gloved hands holding a vertical garage-door track and a wrench at its mounting bracket beside a door hinge. — Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement, Peterborough
Garage Door Track Repair or ReplacementThe door has started rubbing the frame on the left, leaving a shiny stripe down the weatherstrip. Looking closely, the bracket near the floor stands a finger's width off the wood, its screws half out.
  4. Person kneeling inside a garage reaching up along the vertical track of a white paneled door, with a toolbox and drill nearby. — Garage Door Cable Replacement, Peterborough
Garage Door Cable ReplacementYour older door has springs along the tracks, and one cable has slipped off its pulley and dangles slack. The door lifts crooked and needs a shoulder to close, when it used to glide.
  5. Person holding metal bars beside exposed coiled springs above a garage door. — Torsion Spring Replacement, Peterborough
Torsion Spring ReplacementYou heard a sharp bang from the garage, and now the opener hums for a second and gives up. The door lifts a few centimetres at most, then settles back down as if something very heavy is holding it in place.

Extension Spring ReplacementIt is the first hard frost of the year and the door on the old detached garage has stopped halfway, squealing at one pulley. The springs are the ones that came with the door decades ago, orange with rust where they hang…

Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair

It is a January morning and the door lifts about a hand's width, groans, and settles back down. When you pull the release and try by hand the door feels far heavier than it used to, and the bottom seal is stuck hard to the slab.

How a visit goes

Trade guidance treats a garage door as a system: sections, hinges, rollers, tracks, cables, springs and opener all depend on one another, and an impact on one section rarely stops there. That is why a section replacement includes checking what the damage did to everything connected to it.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Arranging the visit

We agree a time that suits you and confirm what we will bring. If a photo helps, send one; a crooked door or a snapped spring is easy to spot.

  2. 2 of 3

    Looking before deciding

The technician inspects the door from the tracks to the opener, checks the spring size and condition, and notes anything else that is wearing.

  3. 3 of 3

    Doing the work properly

Springs are wound to the correct turns, cables seated on their drums, hardware tightened, and the balance confirmed so the door stays where it is left.

Peterborough information

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 64%Older homes

About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Original openers in older neighbourhoods often predate photo-eye sensors and rolling-code remotes. Bringing one up to date means a quieter motor, sensors that stop the door for a child or pet, and remotes that cannot be copied from the driveway, all installed in a single visit.

  • 57%

Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).

Where housing types are mixed, some doors belong entirely to the homeowner and others are subject to a condo corporation's rules on colour and style. Before recommending a replacement door we ask who has a say, so the door chosen is one that can actually be installed.

What to expect, in questions

Does changing a section affect the springs or balance?

It can. A new section may be a little heavier or lighter than the old one, particularly if insulation, glazing or a strut differs, and the springs are set for the door's actual weight. After the exchange the technician lifts the door by hand with the opener disconnected and adjusts the spring tension until it holds steady at mid-height. On a bottom-section job the springs are unloaded and reloaded as part of the work anyway.

Can one damaged section be replaced without replacing the whole door?

Usually, yes. A sectional door is built from separate sections joined by hinges, so a single creased, rusted or cracked section can be unhinged and exchanged while the others stay in place. The conditions are that a section for your make, model and size is still available and that the rest of the door and its hardware are in good order. When damage spans several sections or the design is discontinued, a full door is compared alongside.

How should I look after the door after the section is replaced?

A little routine goes a long way. Each month, look along the hinges for loose screws, spin the rollers, and check the door's balance by lifting it by hand with the opener disconnected. Twice a year, apply a light garage-door lubricant to hinge pivots, roller stems and springs, and keep the tracks clean and dry. Rinse salt off the lower sections in spring, touch up chips, and keep the bottom seal clear of ice in winter.

Why does the door need to be balanced, and how is that tested?

Balance means the spring is holding almost exactly the door's weight, so the door neither flies up nor slams down and the opener only guides it. It is tested by releasing the opener, lifting the door to about waist height and letting go: a balanced door stays there. The technician fine-tunes in quarter turns of the spring until the door holds at several heights and travels evenly on both sides.

Could the wiring be the problem rather than the sensors?

Frequently. The sensors are fed by a thin two-conductor wire from the head unit that crosses the ceiling and drops down both sides of the door, and it is pierced by staples, cut by shelving screws, chewed by mice or pulled from its terminals more often than a sensor fails. Both sensor lights dark, or an opener code for an open or reversed circuit, points to the wire. The technician tests the run with a meter and repairs or replaces the damaged section.
