Most of what goes wrong with a garage door in Edmison Heights is small: a cracked roller, a hinge with an oval hole, a bearing that dried out. We carry those parts, replace them in sets so wear stays even, and lubricate the rest, which is often all a noisy or sticky door needed.

Garage door services

Our garage door work

We think of garage door work in Edmison Heights as keeping a heavy moving object safe and smooth. That covers spring and cable work, tracks and rollers, opener force and sensor settings, seals against the weather, and complete door replacement when a repair no longer makes sense.

Springs

Springs & Hardware

Hinges hold the sections together and let them fold around the curve of the track. When they crack or wear oval, the door binds and the panels begin to separate.

The garage door on a house in Edmison Heights is usually the entrance the family uses most, so we treat a repair as something that has to hold. That means finding the cause rather than the symptom, replacing the worn neighbour as well as the broken part, and setting the door up so the opener is not straining.

Edmison Heights information

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 64%Older homes

About 64% of homes in Peterborough were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Extension springs are common on older doors, and they should carry a safety cable through the middle so a broken spring is held rather than flung. Adding those cables is a small job the technician checks for and offers on any older door he services.

  • 57%

Single-detached houses make up about 57% of homes in Peterborough (2021 Census).

A blend of housing means a blend of garages: spacious attached garages with full headroom on the detached lots, and tight tandem garages with little side room in the attached units. Openers, tracks and springs are all sized at the door rather than assumed from the street.

Garage Door Tune-Up

On windy nights the door rattles in its frame, there is a line of daylight along one side, and the bottom seal has gone hard and flat. Leaves and fine snow drift in underneath and the garage never seems to hold its temperature.

Garage Door Tune-Up

What to expect, in questions

(249) 494-2877

Can a tune-up make my noisy door quieter?

Usually, yes, and often dramatically. Most garage door noise comes from dry hinge pins, dry roller bearings and hardware that vibration has loosened, and those three are exactly what a tune-up addresses. Some noise comes from parts that have worn, such as a roller gone out of round or a chain that has stretched, and the technician tells you which sounds were settled by maintenance and which point to a part worth replacing, with a separate quote for that.

What information helps when I call?

Where the damage is, at floor level, near the curve or overhead; what caused it if you know, such as a bumper or a ladder; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway; whether any roller has come out of the channel; whether there is a spring above the door or springs along the tracks; and the door's rough size. A photo of the damaged length and of a bracket with its screws is very useful.

Can I lift the door by hand while a cable is off?

Leave it. With one cable slack the door is being carried on one side only, so it is unbalanced and may bind or drop unevenly when moved. The technician arrives with clamps and a method for taking the door's weight before anything is moved, and that is the moment to lift it. Until then a stationary door is exactly what you want.

Is it all right to keep shelves and storage near the springs?

Keep a clear zone around them. The springs, pulleys and cables move on every cycle, and anything leaning into their path, such as a ladder, a hockey bag or a shelf edge, can catch a cable or knock a pulley. Storage that crowds the rear hangers also slows any future service. A hand's width of clear air around each spring's full travel, and nothing hung from the springs or their cables, is the rule of thumb.

What is the red cord hanging from the opener for?

It is the manual release. Pulling it disconnects the door from the opener's trolley so the door can be moved by hand, which is how the balance test is done and how you get the car out during a power cut. The industry standard calls for it to be red and reachable, no more than about six feet above the floor. Reconnecting is usually as simple as running the opener once.
