Repair & Maintenance
Do you look at the door between the garage and the house?
If the garage is attached, yes, briefly. That door should be tight-fitting, weatherstripped and fitted with a self-closer, because it is the barrier that keeps vehicle exhaust out of the living space. A technician who finds it propped open, missing its closer or failing to latch notes it in the report as a maintenance item, alongside the overhead door findings. Garage Door Safety Inspection
What information helps when I book?
The door type and rough size, single or double; the opener brand or a photo of its label; what you have noticed, such as noise, shaking, hesitation, slamming or reversing, and whether it is worse in cold weather; whether the door has been struck by anything; and whether the springs are above the door or along the sides. None of this is required, but each detail helps the right parts and tools arrive with the technician. Garage Door Tune-Up
My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?
Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
How much room do you need in the garage on the day?
Enough to bring the new section in, lay it flat, and work at both tracks and the spring shaft. Moving vehicles out of the garage and clearing a metre or two along the walls where the tracks run makes the job smoother, as does clear access to the opener and the ceiling around the spring. Sections are handled by two people and are wider than the door opening, so a clear path from the driveway helps. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What happens during the visit, and do I need to move the car?
The technician needs clear access to both tracks from floor to ceiling, so moving vehicles out and shifting anything stored against the walls near the tracks helps. The visit itself runs in order: the door is watched in motion, every roller and its hardware is inspected, the door's balance is tested, the door is secured and the rollers are changed one position at a time, the track is cleaned and squared, moving parts are lubricated, and the door and opener are tested. How long do garage door hinges last?
Many hinges last the life of the door. Those that fail early are usually on doors that were out of balance, had seized rollers, saw heavy daily use, or sat in slush and salt through many winters. A light hinge on a heavy door also wears sooner. Rather than a fixed number of years, watch for cracks near the holes, a rocking pin, rust at the knuckle and screws backing out. Does a heavy insulated door need heavier track?
Usually the standard two-inch track handles a residential insulated door well, provided the gauge matches what the door maker specified and the brackets and hangers are properly fixed. Very heavy or oversized doors, and some carriage-style wood doors, are set up on three-inch track or on heavier-gauge two-inch. If a heavier door was hung on the light track from an earlier door, flexing and spreading follow, and the technician will say so. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Why did the cable come off the drum?
A cable leaves its drum when it goes slack for a moment while the drum keeps turning. The usual reasons are the door closing onto an object or a ridge of ice so the bottom stops early, a spring that has lost tension or broken, or a drum whose set screws let it slip on the shaft. The technician finds which of these happened and corrects it so the new cable stays seated. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
How long does a diagnosis visit take?
The checks themselves run in a set order and take a modest part of an hour on most doors. What extends a visit is the repair that follows: a gear kit or capacitor adds a little, a sensor re-wire or a trolley change adds more, and a door-side problem such as a balance fault may mean a second piece of work. You are told where things stand once the cause is found, before any further work begins. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Is a chain drive supposed to be this noisy?
A chain drive has a steady mechanical sound that a belt drive lacks, and that much is normal. What is not normal is change: a slap along the rail from a loose chain, a clack at one spot from a worn sprocket tooth, grinding from the head as a gear wears, or a rattle from hangers or a header bracket that have loosened. Each of those has a fix, and a repaired chain drive should sound the way it did when it was new. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Why does my belt drive clatter like a chain drive now?
Sprocket noise on a belt drive almost always means tension is wrong in one direction or the other. A slack belt skips teeth on the sprocket and slaps the rail; a belt pulled too tight grinds on the sprocket and strains the motor bearings. Both sound harsh. Setting the tension spring to its proper length, and checking that the sprocket and idler pulley are not worn, brings the quiet back. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will the new opener cope with an unheated garage in winter?
Yes, when it is chosen for it. Manufacturers publish an operating temperature range for each model, and the technician matches that to a detached or unheated garage. The force setting is tuned so the door moves in the cold without the operator being oversensitive, the hardware gets a cold-rated lubricant, and a backup battery is kept charged by the unit. Clearing ice from the threshold remains the one winter chore. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
How is the old door removed?
Technicians disconnect the operator, stabilize the assembly and control the spring system before detaching cables or high-tension fixtures. Sections are supported and separated in sequence, followed by track and related hardware. The agreed scope states whether removed materials are taken away, while site protection keeps nearby finishes and belongings clear during dismantling. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can the new door use my old tracks?
A replacement is normally planned with track designed for its section thickness, rollers, weight and required clearances. Old track may look similar while having a different spacing, curve or support arrangement. The installer identifies every component and follows the selected door maker's compatibility information before proposing reuse. Treating panels and track as one system supports clean travel and correct perimeter positioning. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can reinforcement be added to my current door instead?
Sometimes a door manufacturer provides a documented reinforcement arrangement for an existing model and size. Adding generic struts does not create a known rating by itself because tracks, rollers, hinges, anchors, sections, and jamb connections also share the load. The existing label and construction should be identified before deciding whether a supported upgrade path exists or replacement is more appropriate. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Will my current garage door opener stay in place?
That depends on its supported door size and weight, rail arrangement, condition, controls and safety features. The assessment compares its product information with the selected door and checks whether the attachment can be reinforced correctly. When it remains, travel and force are reset for the new balanced assembly. Any opener change is identified separately in the planned scope. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
