Extension Spring Replacement in Fairbairn Meadows
It is the first hard frost of the year and the door on the old detached garage has stopped halfway, squealing at one pulley. The springs are the ones that came with the door decades ago, orange with rust where they hang near the back wall.
Extension Spring Replacement
In plain words
When one extension spring breaks, the other is replaced with it. The two springs were fitted together, have stretched the same number of times and have rusted in the same air, so the survivor is near the end of its life. More importantly, a door balances only when both sides pull equally; a new spring paired with a tired one lifts one corner ahead of the other and twists the door. Fitting a matched pair rated for the door's weight lets the technician set both sides to the same hook position and hand back a door that rises level and holds where it is left.
How the visit goesOpen the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once. Nothing is broken that you can see, but the springs along the tracks look tired, rusty and slightly sagging.

How the visit goes
Hangers, brackets and what they are screwed into
Extension springs pull against whatever holds their back end, usually an angle-iron hanger bolted to the rear track support or lag-screwed into a ceiling joist. The technician checks that this anchor is tight, that the lag screws bite into wood rather than drywall or a split joist, and that the hanger has not bent under years of load. The bracket that carries the fixed pulley at the front of the track is checked the same way, along with the bottom brackets on the door that the lift cables pull on. An anchor that has loosened lets the spring's geometry drift, which is one reason a door slowly becomes uneven.
Balancing the door by hand
Balance is judged with the opener still disconnected. The technician lowers the door to the floor, then lifts it: it should rise with modest effort, stay put when let go at about waist height, sit steady when fully open, and come down under control rather than dropping. If it sinks, both springs need a little more stretch and each S-hook is moved one hole to take up cable; if it climbs on its own, one hole the other way. Adjustments are always made in pairs, with the door open and clamped again each time, so the two springs stay equal. Two or three rounds usually settle it.
Checking the balance yourself
You can confirm the springs are still doing their share without going near them. With the door closed and nobody in the opening, pull the opener's red release cord so the trolley lets go of the door. Lift the door by its handle to roughly hip height and take your hands away. A door on good springs stays about where it is; if it sinks to the floor the springs have weakened, and if it rises on its own they are pulling harder than the door weighs. Either way it is a call rather than a job for you. Reconnect the opener the way your manual describes, usually by running it once.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1Track or section damage found on the way
A bent horizontal track, a bracket pulled off the jamb or a top section twisted by running the opener on a broken spring is separate repair work, quoted on its own.
2Converting to torsion instead
Where the garage has the headroom, some owners take the opportunity to move to a torsion system. That is a different job with different hardware and is quoted as its own option.
3Getting the van to the garage
A detached garage down a shared laneway, a rural property or a building with the bay behind a gate takes more time to reach and set up in, and the quote allows for that.
Extension Spring Replacement: questions
Could I switch to torsion springs instead of replacing the extension ones?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. A torsion system needs room above the door opening for its shaft and a header that can carry the spring bracket, which many older garages with a low ceiling simply lack; extension springs are there for that reason. Where the headroom exists, a conversion is a separate job with its own hardware and quote. The technician can tell you on the spot which route suits your garage.
Is it all right to keep shelves and storage near the springs?
Keep a clear zone around them. The springs, pulleys and cables move on every cycle, and anything leaning into their path, such as a ladder, a hockey bag or a shelf edge, can catch a cable or knock a pulley. Storage that crowds the rear hangers also slows any future service. A hand's width of clear air around each spring's full travel, and nothing hung from the springs or their cables, is the rule of thumb.
What is a safety cable, and does my door need one?
A safety or containment cable is threaded down the inside of each extension spring and fixed at the hanger behind and the bracket in front. It carries no load in normal use. If a spring snaps, the cable keeps the broken halves in place beside the track. Every extension-spring door should have one each side, and the industry's inspection checklist asks for it. Doors installed decades ago often have none; they are added with the new springs.
